I haven’t posted much of anything about our bedroom since I very first shared the pictures of our apartment after moving in, here. We’ve done little updates in there, but not not much at all until this weekend when our family was visiting. We finally got around to tackling a project that we had literally been meaning to do for years.

The first year that we lived in New Orleans, now two and a half years ago, Drew and I were brainstorming ideas for decorating his studio apartment when he decided he thought it would be neat to turn an old door into a headboard for his bed. I didn’t know of anyone who had done this before, but after doing a quick search online, it was easy to find pictures of this being done about a million different ways. That weekend we made a trip to a local flea market where we immediately saw the perfect, old, solid wood door for our headboard. We got the guy to sell it to us for $15. We strapped it into the back of Drew’s then tiny car and I held onto it from the front seat the whole way home.

Then it sat in Drew’s apartment for the rest of that year, sat in a storage building in New Orleans with the rest of Drew’s stuff for the entire summer, sat in Drew’s apartment again all last year and made the trek with us to our new apartment when we moved in last spring. Since then, it has just been sitting in our bedroom propped up against the wall. It was high time we got to work on making it function for more than just taking up space.

The only thing we had done to it was last Fall, we did take it outside Drew’s old apartment, borrowed sawhorses from his landlords, and had Drew’s mom bring down a small circular saw when she came to visit and we cut part of the end off of it. We trimmed down the floor end of the door to match the same width of the design as the top of the door. That way there was an even amount of space between each of the panels in the design of the door. I also took sandpaper and lightly sanded down any rough places and scrubbed it clean.

This weekend Drew and his dad made a quick trip to Lowe’s and spent only $10.81 in the rest of the supplies we needed to complete the project– a few boards and a couple bolts and screws. It took less than an hour to put the thing together. Silly after waiting almost three years to do it, huh?

Basically, they took two 2×4’s and cut them to fit from the floor to the height that I wanted the bottom of the headboard to be. They then bolted those into the basic metal bedframe that we already had. The door rested on top of those and then they used two 1×4’s to go from the floor to right below the top of the door and screwed those into the existing 2×4’s and also the door itself. The door was really heavy, so we wanted to make sure there was a lot of support for it, that is why we rested it on the 2×4’s. It worked really well and seems to be really sturdy.

This is what it looked like once they were done:

I had them put the part of the door that had the handle on it on the bottom, so that it would be covered up with pillows and wouldn’t be noticeable. Even though getting new side tables that match is on our to-do list, it worked out perfectly that both of the tables we have now fit perfectly under the slight overhang from the door on each side of the bed. We’ll know when looking for new ones to get ones that are under 26 inches or so.

I really like it. I think it adds so much character to the room. Especially for only about $25 and just a little bit of time. I debated a lot on whether to paint it or leave it natural. I even bought paint a couple years ago right after we got it to paint it with but just never got around to doing it. I’ve developed a greater love for the character in natural wood since then. I especially like the weathered look of this wood. It adds to its history and charm.

I might change my mind after we get new side tables and pick out bedding, but for now it is staying like it is. I also considering adding crown molding to the top as well to make it look more like a headboard, so in the future it might get a makeover. However, for now, I just can’t believe that we actually finished this project and got this door up off the floor!

Have any of you ever gotten creative with an old door? There are lots of artists in Jackson Square in New Orleans that use old doors as canvas for their paintings. Any other creative headboard ideas?

This past weekend has been super busy and lots of fun! Drew’s Mom, Dad and Grandma have been here along with my Mom as well. They drove down from our hometown Friday evening and will be here until tomorrow morning. It has been such a blast to have guests in our home. It is so nice for it to be full of people and laughing and chatting. It gets kind-of quiet around here with just Drew and I here all the time. I grew up in a house full of people and I love being surrounded by family.

Anyway, we have been visiting, running around and eating all over New Orleans. We’ve visited other friends they have here, we’ve worked on small house projects, we’ve relaxed and watched movies, we’ve been shopping, and all kinds of things. I think they have all had a great time so far. I wish they didn’t live so far away and could visit more often! I love having people over at our house!

They also had to see Drew fly his plane. That didn’t end so well…

In case the plane in three pieces didn’t give it away, the plane had a big crash this time. Drew was quite sad. Although he did get two pretty good flights in before it broke, so he seems to be sort-of improving his flight skills.

Anyway, I just wanted to take a second to say how blessed I am to have family here on this lovely first day of November. The weather couldn’t be any more perfect either!

We also found out this weekend that my older sister is having a baby BOY due in March!!!! This will be the first baby boy born in my family in 27 years!!! My older brother has been the only boy in a family full of girls for the longest time! I can’t wait until my first nephew gets here! My nieces are super excited about having a little brother as well! My mom and I have already been looking at baby boy clothes!! So exciting!!

Life is so blessed! 🙂

This weekend, I was in charge of organizing T/NASA’s first painting workshop. (Tulane/Newcomb Art Student Association) It was for abstract acrylic painting and one of Tulane’s grad students taught us many different tips and techniques for achieving different looks and textures in our artwork. It was a great day spent painting with friends.

Everyone seemed to have a really great time and lots of inspiring artwork was produced. It was so nice to be painting again! Especially after being so inspired by abstract art lately!

A big thanks to Tim for bringing his camera and taking pictures and for letting me use it to take a million pictures as well.

4 years ago today, Drew and I went to see a play together at our local junior college that our high school was putting on. We had been friends for a couple years and had recently seen and talked to each other a lot more. We had gone on a couple dates in the weeks before, but that night, at intermission, we were sitting there drinking our punch and nibbling on mini chocolate eclairs when a friend of mine asked if we were dating. We both obviously liked each other, but we hadn’t officially established the titles of boyfriend and girlfriend for each other yet. We looked and each other and Drew responded with “yes.” The rest is history.

So every year on October 20th, we clear our schedules and go out to a nice dinner and reminisce about all that we have accomplished as a couple. Last year we went to Bayona and this year we went to Coquette. It was amazing. Seriously, if you are ever in the New Orleans area you must go there. (both places if you have the chance)

The last four years have been great. Drew and I have been through so much, been to so many places, and been able to accomplish so much with each other’s help. We make a great team and I’m so blessed to have him by my side everyday. I love where our lives are right now; together in our little house and planning for our wedding. I can’t wait to see all the wonderful things that our future together holds. I love you Andrew!

P.S. If you want to read what I had to say on this day last year, check that out here.

Lately I’ve been so inspired by colorful abstract art.

I love the work of Michelle Armas. Aren’t these pieces gorgeous? Look at the amazing use of color and movement!

I also really like the work of Sally Benedict as well.

I could stare at these paintings all day! I really want one for my office. Maybe sometime soon I’ll have time to break out my paints again and get to work on one. 🙂

Anyone else feeling particularly inspired by art? or nature? the fall weather?

I love Fall. Although New Orleans doesn’t really have the leaf-changing, hay-riding, cool, jacket, bonfire weather that I grew up with for Fall, October is still a nice month here. The weather starts to cool a little (70s & 80s) and sometimes it dips into the 60s in the evenings, but there is usually a nice breeze, the humidity isn’t too high, and it is really nice to be outside. October is also Drew and I’s anniversary month, so fall time always particularly brings back memories of  the beginning of our relationship.

What I don’t like about October is that it is always midterms time for school and with the weather changing so much, I get more headaches than usual. I also currently have a cold. Yuck. This week has been stopped up head, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, losing my voice, headaches, fever, etc… With it being midterms however, I can’t afford to be sick. Colds have that tendency to drag on for weeks, so I’ve been doing my best to try to get over it as quickly as possible.

It seems like every time I get a cold, I fall into the same routine to get my wellness back on track.

I drink warm green tea with lots and lots of honey. I always buy local honey. I’ve always heard local honey is better for health/allergies, etc..

There are lots of great green teas out there, but this is the one I’ve always stuck to.

I’ve always loved Halls Vitamin C citrus drops and I also like Halls Naturals Honey Lemon Chamomile sore throat drops.

I always take my multi-vitamins daily, but when I’m sick or feel like I might get sick, I always take Echinacea. It is natural, comes from coneflowers and is really good for immune system health. There are other vitamins that are particularly good for your immune system, but my daily multi-vitamin already contains several of those as well.

As always, I also try to eat as healthy as possible, particularly lots of fruits and vegetables to make sure my body is getting lots of added vitamins and minerals so that it can work more easily to fight off my cold.

My favorite soup is also a go-to meal when I’m feeling under the weather.

Chicken/Potato/Vegetable with Rice and Barley. Super simple to make as well. Just chicken stock/broth, salt/pepper/seasonings, chicken, potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, green beans, corn, rice, barley and any other vegetables that I have around. So delicious and full of tasty things! I usually make quite a bit of this and freeze it in small containers so that I can easily take one out and warm it up if I’m not feeling well. (or if I’m just in a soup mood. I could seriously eat this everyday!)

When I have a cold, I try to make sure to open the windows in the house every so often to get the air circulating with fresh air and let the stale air and germs out of the house. I also make sure to frequently wash my clothes, towels, cloth napkins, sheets and anything else that I have my mouth or hands on that could have picked up my coughing germs. The same goes for cleaning and disinfecting any other surfaces around the house. This not only keeps germs from spreading to Drew or whoever else is in the house, but I always feel like getting my own cold germs out of the house helps my own body heal itself better as well. The fresher and cleaner things are the better.

I also try to get a little extra sleep every night. I definitely think that sleep helps almost anything feel better, but is especially needed when your body is working twice as hard as usual to fight off infection.

Do you have a certain recipe for wellness when you are under the weather? Does anybody else drink tea and take lots of vitamins? I feel like a lot of people’s first reaction to not feeling well is to try to take some kind of medication. I rarely do. Is anyone else with me? I’d love to hear your wellness secrets! 🙂

I haven’t mentioned much about decorating the kitchen since we moved in to our apartment. I did mention this post about inspiration for the kitchen, but that is about it. We haven’t done much in the kitchen, because it is pretty functional and looks fine for now pretty much the way it is. We did need a little bit of artwork though. The nook above the sink was a little bare.

Especially with that spotlight right above there, it definitely emphasized the fact that it was empty and bare. Perfect place for artwork! After settling into our apartment and seeing our existing kitchen decor, I noticed that it consisted of neutral beige and whites with pops of greens, blues, and pink-y/coral/oranges. I had been contemplating what kind of artwork to put up there when I realized the kitchen print from this post last May would be perfect!

So of course, I ordered it immediately. It came from Canada, so it took a week or two to get here, but arrived in perfect condition. The only downside is that it is an odd size for framing–10.5 x 14 inches. I took it to Michael’s to see how much it would be to have it custom framed, and they said it would be upwards of $130 for just a simple white frame and matte! How ridiculous! Instead I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a pretty white 16×20 frame with a 40% off coupon and had Michael’s cut me a custom white matte to match the dimensions of the print to the frame. This was much cheaper, but still not free– $22 for the frame and about $22 to get the matte cut as well. Why it costs as much to get a matte cut as it does to buy an entire frame with wood, glass, and backing, is beyond me.

So anyway, this process took a couple weeks. I bought the frame at Hobby Lobby while I was at home visiting a few weeks ago and then ordered the matte as soon as I got back to New Orleans and it took a week and a half for them to cut the matte. (again, kind-of ridiculous) As soon as I got all the pieces, I put it together. I love the way the matte and frame look with the print!

Drew installed the hanging hardware on the back of the frame and we hung her up!

I love the way the frame looks in there! The simple edges of the frame match really well with both the kitchen cabinets and the trim around the windows and the door.

I just love how it fits perfectly with the feel and look of our kitchen. I love the colors, the old-fashioned, home-y feel, and the pretty flowers, cups, tea towels, and rolling pins.

The name of the print is “Hot Chocolate.” How sweet!

The kitchen (and the rest of the house too) is really coming together. I love the feel of our house so far. It is becoming so cozy and home-y and I love being here!

In case you noticed in the pictures above, that is more basil growing in water by the sink. I broke off a few bits of my bigger basil plant in the windowbox and put them in water to grow roots so I could plant them and grow more basil plants. I planted one of them the other day and it is about time for me to plant this one as well.

Oh and if you like my kitchen print and would like to check out more work from the artist or order one for yourself, visit Janet Hill’s Etsy shop, here. She has such pretty paintings! I want them all!

For my Drawing class, we each had to make a list of 100 questions that sincerely intrigue us. This is easier said than done. It was pretty hard actually. It took me several hours. I mean, we constantly are thinking of things that intrigue us or that we question, but when it comes time to actually write them all down at once, it is hard to remember them. I asked several people and got a few responses and those helped trigger more and here is the list of the first 100 questions that I could come up with:

It definitely made me think, that is for sure. It is so crazy the things that people wonder about, the things we don’t know, the things that are so mind boggling. I’m curious to see what other people in my class came up with. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow! I’m also curious to see what we end up doing with this.
I think it would be interesting to keep a notebook and record all the questions like this that you come up with on a regular basis. All the things in life you question. So interesting…

Goodness, it has been a long time since I’ve shared cooking and food related things on here! I’ve still been cooking just as much, if not more, but just haven’t gotten around to sharing those tasty things.

One night this week for dinner I made stuffed green bell peppers. There are many ways you can make them. My mom always made them with rice, I’ve had them with oatmeal before, and when I was visiting in France several years ago, my friend Anne-Nelly’s mom made them for dinner one night with Quinoa (she also made stuffed tomatoes, which are equally delicious!). If you’ve never used or heard of Quinoa before, it is a grain-like substance of little seeds, but when cooked is similar in consistency to rice or couscous. It is known for its nutritional value–high protein content, fiber, lysine and essential amino acid content, high in magnesium and iron and is gluten-free. It is great and easy in this recipe and is much healthier than using rice or oatmeal.

1. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup dry quinoa and 1 jar (mine was a pint, because that is what I had, but a quart jar would work as well–if I had it I would have preferred the extra tomatoes of the quart size) of home canned tomatoes. You need at least two cups of liquid in with the quinoa, so depending on how much liquid was in your tomatoes, you might have to add extra water. With a pint jar of tomatoes, I ended up adding an extra cup of water. If you don’t have canned tomatoes, you can also use a jar of crushed tomatoes that you buy from the store or you could just cook the quinoa in water and add fresh tomatoes into the rest of the inside mixture (I’ve also used tomato sauce or paste before and my mom uses ketchup). Cook according to directions on quinoa, but most likely you will bring them to a boil, then simmer for 10-15 minutes.

2. In a large skillet, brown 1 lb. hamburger (could also use ground turkey, sausage or whatever you prefer or leave out for a vegetarian option). Drain meat and add 1 onion, several cloves of garlic, and any chopped vegetables you would like (I added carrots to mine and the bits of green pepper around the tops I cut off) and cook until done. Also add salt, pepper, or other spices to taste.

3. Once quinoa is done, mix it in with meat and vegetable mixture.

4. Cut the tops off of your green peppers (this recipe should make 4-5 peppers, but I only had 3, so as you can see I had filling left over), place in baking or loaf pan and stuff peppers with filling mixture. You can also steam the peppers before baking if you want, but I’ve never done so. If you have extra filling, stuff it around outside of peppers in baking pan.

5. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or so, until bell peppers are tender. You can also add cheese to the tops in the last few minutes of baking.

Enjoy! 🙂

All due credit given to my wonderful older sister, Blair, for her yummy home grown and home canned tomatoes. Oh and also to Drew, who put the peppers in the oven and monitored them while I went to my Pilates class. That is also why they are a little burned on top! 😉

Well, today we figured out one thing Drew can mark off his list of possible careers.

He has been talking about wanting a remote control airplane for a long time. Did you know that they have remote control airplanes that cost up to $20,000!!! How ridiculous!! (We watched a show about them on How It’s Made)

Today on his way home from work, Drew stopped by some hobby shop to look at them. Apparently this one that he ended up coming home with was originally $180, but was on sale for 40% off. He said he told the worker that his fiancee’ would no way let him spend $70+ on a Styrofoam airplane, so they let him have it for $55. Still ridiculous in my opinion, but I wasn’t there to stop it.

We couldn’t eat dinner fast enough for Drew to get to City Park to test it out.

The first time he tried it, he held down the gas and that thing flew off a lot faster than either of us expected. It shot off and Drew pretty much didn’t have a clue how to operate it.

It ended up hitting a tree going pretty fast. Luckily it bounced off and fell to the ground instead of getting stuck.

The next several attempts were a little better, but not soon later we ended up with this:

I’m surprised he was able to get it down. Luckily, it didn’t have a ton of damage either.

I think this is the best landing that he was able to pull off. Glad there weren’t any passengers on board.

This is right before we left, you can see the cracked white side of the front nose part. Overall, not to bad for being wrecked ten times or so. I definitely think Drew won’t be pursuing flight school anytime soon.

It was definitely a beautiful sunset in the park though. 🙂
