Right now in life, I am:

MAKING updates to my blog design! Hoping to unveil a new design in the New Year!
COOKING lots of family recipes (and making them gluten-free)! I made my family’s spaetzle recipe gluten free for the first time, I made my favorite Sawdust Pie (recipe here), and I’ve made gluten-free Angel Biscuits too using this new All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour. Drew got a smoker this month, so he has been smoking pork butts, chickens, and brisket.
DRINKING hot chocolate!
READING  Mastering the Art of Fabric Printing and Design. I actually bought this book from a cute little design shop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire when Drew and I were there on our honeymoon. It has only taken me nearly three years to start reading it!
WANTING to go Christmas caroling next month!
PLAYING Taylor Swift’s new 1989 album. And this.
SEWING nothing this month, but I have a sewing project that I want to tackle in December! It involves these gold cloth napkins from West Elm.
CROCHETING a grey throw for our living room.
WISHING for a restful weekend. Last weekend was a busy, wonderful Thanksgiving weekend spent with family in Nashville (see photo below), but I’m looking forward to some downtime and relaxing this weekend. (In other words, I really want to lay on my couch and crochet and watch Christmas movies and do nothing else. But I have a lot of projects I’m working on, so I probably will be busy too.)

ENJOYING shopping with my older sister, Blair, and mother-in-law, Susie, on Black Friday. We skipped the early morning crowds and went shopping together Friday afternoon at the mall. It was a great time and I got some things I needed (on major sale!).
WAITING until Christmas! So excited to see everyone open the gifts I’ve picked out for them.
LIKING this apron I picked up from an antique/thrift store.
WONDERING what this little cat thinks of us. She did so great on the long car ride to and from Nashville last weekend (see photo below). Although she must think we are crazy for all the chaos in her life lately!
LOVING how Drew’s childhood dresser makeover turned out!
HOPING for a wonderful Christmas season for everyone! I love this time of year!
MARVELING at THE PATTERNS I MADE this month! I’ve wanted to learn repeatable pattern design for so long! Some photos of the process: working, illustrations, my first pattern!, experimenting, my favorite so far.
NEEDING to slow down and enjoy this Advent season. It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle.
SMELLING Sweet Olive trees, roses, more roses, and lots of delicious foods this month.

WEARING this outfit for our Christmas pictures this year. I’ll post about our cards soon.
FOLLOWING in my childhood footsteps by breaking out the watercolors.
NOTICING this fortune I found tucked inside my Moleskine notebook.
KNOWING that dreams take hard work.
THINKING about how much I love our living room gallery wall! So great to finally have it finished!
BOOKMARKING this newsletter from Braid Creative. As she says, “if you feel like your gift isn’t special or unique that’s okay – because it’s not your special gift that really matters – it’s the consistent and persistent way in which you show up, do the thing, and put it out there.”
CELEBRATING a wonderful Thanksgiving. Lots of food, kiddos, relaxing, swaddling, playing, and crafting.
OPENING the door to our house and reveling in how clean and organized it is! After nearly a month of having plumbing work done in our house, we deep cleaned and organized every room. It is more put together than it has ever been.
LAUGHING at Violet’s little pawprint.
FEELING thankful! For Drew, for Violet, for work, for family, for our home, for creativity.

October was such a wonderful month! A little busy, a little crazy, but beautiful weather and some pretty awesome opportunities!

Right now in life, I am:

MAKING progress on our art gallery wall for the living room! I finally have all the frames I need, I just need to decide on their layout and put the artwork in a few of them.
COOKING homemade Vegetable Beef soup. Along with more Artisan Gluten-free BreadWhite Chicken Chili, and  Cheese Stuffed Lasagna Manicotti. We also made our first Sunday roast of the season this month.
DRINKING water out of my new bkr water bottle. Love it!
READING Anne of Green Gables (my favorite), again.
WANTING to spend more time outside in the lovely weather before it starts getting cold.

IMG_1624-1

PLAYING not that much on the radio. More often than not lately, I’ve been turning my radio off while I’m driving and use that quiet as prayer/relaxation/mediation/thinking time. Surprising how centering and peaceful the silence can be.
SEWING nothing right now.
CROCHETING (in the photos above) a baby blanket for Drew’s great-niece, born this month. I’ve also been working on a throw blanket for our living room.
WISHING for a restful weekend. Last weekend was so wonderful, but so busy.
ENJOYING the gorgeous weather in New Orleans. This month we’ve enjoyed going on more walks around New Orleans and spent some time relaxing on a quilt by the Mississippi river soaking up the sunshine and the nice breeze. We also visited the Blues and BBQ Festival downtown while Drew’s parents were in town visiting.
WAITING until we have an IKEA in New Orleans! So we visited the one in Houston, TX last weekend.

LOVING our sweet little kitten, Violet!
HOPING that I meet a lot of my creative goals in the next year.
MARVELING at how nice it is to have a little kitten to come home to and to be excited to see you/spend time with you. Our lives must have been incredibly boring before we got her!
NEEDING to paint more, and blog more, and design more.

IMG_2157-1

SMELLING the wonderful aroma of Sweet Olive trees.
WEARING a frappuccino costume for my work’s Nursery school trick-or-treating! (nude colored sweater (a dress would have been better) Starbucks logo, white feather boa for whipped cream and gold Mardi Gras beads for the caramel)
FOLLOWING (new to me) designers Leah Duncan and  Elizabeth Olwen after meeting them and seeing their fabric designs at Quilt Market last weekend.
NOTICING how places hold so many memories.
KNOWING that exciting things are to come in my creative career! So inspired after meeting so many of my favorite fabric designers at Quilt Market.

IMG_2494-1

THINKING a lot about my future, my creative passions, my career, and what I really want out of life. Bonnie Christine’s Design Surface Patterns from Scratch course and Quilt Market have been so invigorating to me!
BOOKMARKING this devotional to read at our Staff Meeting next week. So often I get so stressed/worried/anxious spending time trying to solve all my problems and I forget to stop and pray about them. Let Go and Let God.
CELEBRATING seven years together with my sweetheart this month.
OPENING this new iPhone case. LOVE it!
LAUGHING at this silly little kitten.
FEELING thankful for little Violet and her ability to make us put our phones and computers down and spend time sitting on the floor jiggling around a stuffed mouse. Here’s to slowing down and enjoying the moment.

Click to check out June, July, and August.

Right now in life, I am:

MAKING progress on my goals for creative self-improvement! I’ve been practicing my calligraphy and hand-lettering (I joined the New Orleans Lettering Arts Association), I’ve been working on a few logo projects, I’ve started Bonnie Christine’s Designing Surface Patterns from Scratch Course on CreativeLive, I’ve been blogging more lately, and I’ve been working on a much needed blog re-design! (more to come with all of this in October!)
COOKING many loaves of Artisan Gluten-free Bread, making lots of yummy Fall soups, such as Chicken Tortilla soup, White Chicken Chili, and Creamy Potato Soup with Sausage and Kale, and baking up some delicious Cheese Stuffed Lasagna Manicotti.
DRINKING mostly water, as usual. A little bit of sweet tea while Front Porch Sitting.
READING The Happiness Project, still. Drew and I have been reading a little bit of it in the evenings together before bed. Lately I’ve really been wanting to re-read Anne of Green Gables (my absolute favorite book ever).
WANTING to have time to get through Bonnie Christine’s Designing Surface Patterns from Scratch Course next month! I’ve watched a little bit of it live and I’ve bought the course to watch, but I just haven’t had time to make it through it yet (working full-time makes it hard to have time for all this creative stuff!). I’m so excited about this though. For the longest time I’ve wanted to design fabric and I’m excited to start actually making surface pattern designs and see where that leads!
PLAYING country music on the radio.
SEWING nothing right now.
CROCHETING a baby blanket for Drew’s niece’s baby. Just finished it today!
WISHING for an October filled with lots of time outside.
ENJOYING the gorgeous weather in New Orleans. This weekend is the first weekend we’ve been able to have the windows open. Absolutely LOVE this time of year!
WAITING to hang our living room gallery wall until I have all the pieces painted/framed/collected. Getting closer! I did get a few frames this weekend that were on clearance at Target!

hot air balloons1

LOVING that the hot Summer temperatures are mostly gone and Drew and I’s 7 year dating anniversary is coming up in October! (yes, we still celebrate that!).
HOPING that I meet a lot of creative goals next month.
MARVELING at the change in seasons. In New Orleans, it doesn’t look much different from season to season, but it feels so different. I love this quote:

“There is indeed, something inexpressibly pleasing in the annual renovation of the world, and the new display of the treasures of nature.” -Samuel Johnson

NEEDING to paint more. My Art Studio Inspiration Wall is inspiring me, now I just have to make the time to sit down and paint!
SMELLING the first Sunday roast of the season in the oven cooking as I type.
WEARING ballet flats again! It is still warm enough outside here to wear flip-flops/sandals, but I’ve started making the Fall transition to flats lately.
FOLLOWING along with Bonnie Christine’s Design Surface Patterns From Scratch Blog Tour. So inspiring to see everything that people have been able to create since taking her class. A great motivator! See more work from the students that have taken her class so far, here.
NOTICING nature around me lately. Drew and I were walking around for Art’s for Art’s Sake last night and I kept stopping to take pictures of pretty things.
KNOWING that things change, often for the better. Missing Kelly (our Associate Pastor I had the pleasure of working with over the last year) and her family as they move to Seattle, Washington. Enjoyed a lovely farewell lunch for her at Commander’s Palace last week. (photo above)

FEELING thankful for the church I work at and the 20/30s program there. I’m enjoying forming closer friendships with lots of great people. Loving our Friday afternoon Front Porch Sitting Club

august apple picking1

I’m really starting to enjoy blogging again now that I’m doing these monthly posts. I love being able to look back on what I’ve been up to. Click to check out June and July.

Right now in life, I am:

MAKING our house pretty. Over the last month we’ve painted our living room, our foyer/dining room, and the french doors connecting the two rooms.
COOKING homemade gluten-free blackberry pies (turns out it is a family tradition! My great-grandmother used to make fabulous blackberry cobblers from blackberries she picked in the backyard–the same backyard I grew up in), rice crispy treats (first time I’ve had those in forever!), and eating lots of fresh cherries. (along with other more sustainable things, you know) I also baked my first loaf of homemade gluten-free bread yesterday!
DRINKING a pineapple juice/orange juice/grenadine/rum cocktail every so often.
READING The Happiness Project.
WANTING to get some more paintings done, print some more prints, and open an Etsy shop.
PLAYING this song over and over again (Drew is obsessed!) and this (it made me cry. I’m so sentimental.).
SEWING new curtains for the living room from plain white sheets.
CROCHETING a throw blanket for our living room.
WISHING for this quatrefoil mirror for our apartment. Love it!
ENJOYING our freshly painted house and how different (better) it feels.
WAITING to hang our living room gallery wall until I have all the pieces painted/framed/collected.
LIKING apple picking, pie making, corn shucking, hiking, and waterfallin’ with my homies in Nashville (my husband, sister, her husband, nieces and nephew). Sweet little Gig was my little shadow all last weekend. 🙂
WONDERING why I decided to chop half my hair off! I miss my long, wavy/curly hair. Short hair is so much maintenance!
LOVING that summer is slowing down. The last few months have been so busy! Looking forward to a quiet fall.
HOPING that my hair grows quickly!
MARVELING at the ability of sweet little kids to help you slow down and take life in.
NEEDING to paint more (mostly actual paintings, but there are a few more walls here that need to be painted too).
SMELLING fresh homemade gluten-free apple and blackberry/raspberry pies Blair, Gigi and I made last weekend. Made with apples we picked (photo above) and berries we bought because I’m obsessed. This was the fourth berry pie I’ve made this summer.
WEARING more black and white lately. I even bought some black skinny jeans last weekend.
FOLLOWING the “one-minute rule” lately. Don’t put off any task that takes a minute or less to accomplish.
NOTICING lots of stars on our visit to the country. I wish we could see the stars better in New Orleans. I love this quote, “If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I bet they’d live life a lot differently.”
KNOWING that I need to spend a little more time on our “curb appeal.” Our rosebushes need to be trimmed (they’ve grown like crazy in the last year!), weeds picked, more mulch spread, some other potted plants need to replace our current ones (our little potted rosebushes constantly struggle with black-spot like crazy. Time to replace them with some simple little boxwoods.) Maybe in September I’ll tackle that.
THINKING a lot about self-improvement and happiness. Fall seems like the perfect time for a fresh start. Love this quote I read today, “Happiness is a collection of small, pleasurable moments.”
BOOKMARKING this gray couch. Oh how I wish our couches looked like that one! (someday…)
OPENING up my creative endeavors by joining the New Orleans Lettering Arts Association! First meeting is next weekend! Can’t wait to learn some new calligraphy techniques! I bought some new supplies this weekend! My new version of “back to school” supplies.
LAUGHING at this sign at a roadside Farmer’s Market.
FEELING thankful for quality sister/niece time last weekend, a weekend getaway/time spent in the country/nature, and for our beautiful, cozy little apartment to return to.

P.S. This past week (September 4th, to be exact) marks 4 years since my first blog post here! Happy 4th Birthday Icing on the Cake blog!

Following in last month’s footsteps, it is time for a peek into my July!

Right now in life, I am:

MAKING lots of things. Many work projects happening, website re-design included. Also logo and lettering projects. House projects and painting rooms too. We made this new tufted bench/coffee table this month from a base we found while shopping in the French Quarter when my friend Tonya was in town. (picture of us below)
COOKING homemade gluten-free Blackberry pie (with a few raspberries thrown in too) using my GF pie crust recipe here. The first fruit pie I think I’ve ever made, actually.
DRINKING always water, and a root beer float on occasion.

LOOKING back on lots of pictures and memories and moments from this past month.
PLAYING a whole lot of Castle episodes. I started watching Castle a couple years ago, about 4 seasons into the show, so I decided this summer it was finally time to go back and watch all the seasons I had missed and get ready for season 7 that starts this Fall! I’m so obsessed!
WASTING a lot of time watching 6 seasons of Castle, lol! But I’m enjoying it, so is time really wasted?
SEWING, well CROCHETING a baby blanket for a gift.
WISHING for a more quiet and relaxing August after all the craziness of July. So much travel, vacation, friends, and family.

photo (6) 1

LIKING exploring so many new places this month and revisiting favorite ones.
WONDERING what I’ll paint next.
LOVING snacking on cherries. I love summertime!
HOPING to finish up several work projects soon! My plate is overflowing!photo (7) 1

When I first started this blog, I posted lots of small posts with random tidbits of life happenings. Over time, as I’ve changed and learned more about blogging, I feel like I post more of those random tidbits on other forms of social media, like Instagram. So where does that leave my blog? It’s something I’ve been questioning more and more lately. I love the record of the parts of my life that are recorded here, but with working full-time, running a business with my husband, starting my art career, and all the other normal life stuff, I feel like my time is pushed so thin and blogging has certainly taken a backseat for me more often than not. It is something I wish I made the time to work on more regularly, but for now, I’m still figuring out what that looks like. I have come across many life-right-now list posts on other blogs (see here, here, here, here, here, and here) and was inspired to perhaps start doing something similar.

Right now in life, I am:

MAKING notes about ideas for house projects I would like to work on this summer.
COOKING simple, fresh, and homemade meals. Fresh salads with walnuts, grated Parmesan, and homemade lemon/oil/honey dressing, homemade pasta with butter/garlic/shallots/parsley and fresh tomatoes, homemade gf strawberry shortcrust, sweet tea, homemade ice cream.
DRINKING lots of water, as always. Also a touch of homemade sweet tea every once and a while.
READING Almost Amish: One Woman’s Quest for a Slower, Simpler, More Sustainable Life
WANTING to take a trip to the beach.
LOOKING forward to the weekend. Ready to get my house cleaned and put back together after having family in town all last week. My studio could also use a little organizing after the last two months preparing for my RAW art show
PLAYING lots of soothing music lately, and a lot of Kacey Musgraves. And this song
WASTING time? energy? Aren’t we all?
SEWING nothing, currently. I did sew a button back on Drew’s pants the other day. I was in the middle of a few crochet projects before I started preparing for my recent art show. I also have plans to make new curtains for my living room windows in the near future. Just as soon as I find the right fabric.
WISHING for a great trip to Nashville next week. I desperately need a mini-vacation!
ENJOYING a quiet morning.
WAITING on the work day to end and the weekend to begin.
LIKING monogrammed leather clutches. Now to find the perfect one at a reasonable price…

NEEDING
a little time to relax and recover from the craziness that has been life lately.

WEARING
teal pants, black and white thin-striped shirt, floral scarf I bought on our honeymoon, white cardigan, quatrefoil necklace, gold watch, gold and leather sandals.

lots of blogs and Instagram accounts. My feed used to be mostly filled with DIY/home decorating bloggers, but it is quickly filling up with many more artists that inspire me.
NOTICING
lots of color combinations in the world around me I can turn into paintings.
KNOWING
that this season of my life will only last so long, so I should soak up every minute of hubby time I can get before we have kiddos running in circles around us while we are trying to work or make dinner.

GIGGLING
at how incredibly sad this cat meme makes me every time I read it.
FEELING
so grateful for where my life is right now. This year so far has been pretty tough for a lot of reasons, but I also have so many reasons to be thankful. I’m still so happy to be done with college (I graduated over a year ago and still constantly stop to think how amazing it is to not have to stay up all night doing homework on a regular basis), I have a great job, wonderful co-workers, a lot of awesome opportunities that have come up lately for my artwork and otherwise, I have a wonderful husband that I love getting to spend my life with, and we are making amazing progress on our debt pay off plan! I am enjoying where I am right now and also have so many wonderful things to look forward to!

cait and drew hug laugh edit1 with watermark

I haven’t blogged here in several weeks, even though I’ve had posts written and ready to publish. I guess sometimes blogging gets emotionally hard–hard to open yourself up and put yourself out there where anyone in the world can read about it.

With it being graduation season, I’ve been constantly reminded that it has been an entire year since I graduated from Tulane. If you’ve been reading this blog for some time, you’ll remember that my college days weren’t the most fun. College was an extremely stressful and hectic time in my life. The stress of classes, studying late into the night, not getting enough sleep, worrying about if I’d make the grades to keep my scholarship, worry about making sure I was choosing the right major, taking the right classes, and starting out onto the right career path, combined with the stress of being far away from family, missing out on family events, feeling not settled in a new place, and all the other stresses that go along with that. Drew and I also started a business and got married while in college–both great things, but also ones that can add additional pressure to an already stressful life. Mostly though, college was a sucky time for me because I had a lot of health issues. Extremely low energy, headaches, acne, minor weight gain, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (AKA: being sick every time I would ever eat anything!), and a slew of other random symptoms. After finally seeing the doctor several times and also a nutritionist, I found out I had both hypothyroidism and gluten-intolerance. Being able to make adjustments to my life based on those findings helped out tremendously, but it was still a great relief to finally graduate and be done with school.

Now that I’ve been out of school for an entire year, I have to say that being out of school is amazing. This last year has been a really tough year in many ways–the loss of my grandpa, excessive family drama, hurtful relationships, but it has also been pretty incredible too. The slightly-depressed-college-me has made many strides towards a happier self this past year. Working in a great environment with amazing people, furthering my art career, working on home and crafting projects that I didn’t have time for while in school, just being able to come home from work and make dinner then sit and read or crochet or paint or DO ANYTHING BUT HOMEWORK is so completely amazing.

A month or so ago, Drew and I grabbed our camera and tripod and drove a few streets over to take a few photos of ourselves. Why? You might ask, as some of our friends did when we said we had been taking pictures. My reply: I want to remember us at this moment in our lives.

Us with our cheesy, laughing, goofing-around grins and awkward bear hugs. Us on State Street, the street I drive down every day to get to work and back. Us in this beautiful city that we’ve fallen in love with. Us at this awesome time in our lives when we are fresh out of college, working hard together to figure out our finances and pay off Drew’s student debt to live financially free. Us working on DIY decorating projects in our apartment together, figuring out our married lives and enjoying this time of being young newlyweds (Are we still newlyweds? It’s been almost two years!). Working, painting, cooking, creating. Living healthy and gluten-free. Excited about dreams for the future– buying a house and having babies, but being completely content in this moment.

Even the smaller things that make up this photo– my favorite turquoise quatrefoil necklace (a gift from Drew), my favorite leather boots (a Christmas gift from my Dad), the subtle black and white pattern of my shirt, the jewel tones I’m wearing, my favorite jeans and gold watch (I wear so often I have a tan line around it), and my hair in its completely natural state. Mr. Beard and Button-ups over there wearing his “tassel-y shoes” and the watch I got him for Christmas. Those things all make up our style right now too. (Although I can’t believe how hot it has gotten over the last month since we took this picture, it is definitely way too hot for leather boots right now!)

I feel like this photo perfectly captures a little glimpse into this time of our lives. And I want to cherish and remember it.

happy-2014

Are you excited for the New Year? I’m always incredibly excited to start a brand new year. I’m a pretty self-reflective person all year, but there is just something special about starting over in the new year with goals and plans and dreams of what lies ahead.

I’m particularly excited about this year because it will be my first full year out of school. I’m pretty excited about all the new possibilities in life now that school doesn’t take up the majority of my days.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you might recall last year’s New Year post. I didn’t set a lot of goals for 2013, but the ones I set were pretty big ones. 2012 was a big year for us, considering we got married, Drew graduated, advances in work and our business happened, but it was a hectic year in school for me filled with some health issues and the start of some financial issues. Our goals for 2013 were for me to graduate from college, find a job, drastically change our health and diet (I went gluten-free and cut out a good deal of other not-good-for-me-stuff) and to drastically start on changes in our financial life by embarking on Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. I’m happy to say that in 2013, we did a really good job at sticking to our goals and changing those things.

2013 (recap)

-Big Health Changes. I went gluten-free, and once I did, I found that gluten (or at least wheat in particular), had been the cause of a lot of digestive problems for me. Once I cut it out of my diet, I immediately noticed that I was no longer having major digestive issues and I’ve noticed a huge change in my energy levels. I feel like I have much more energy and I feel less sluggish. In addition to wheat, I cut out white sugar (I try to only use honey, pure maple syrup, coconut sugar, or raw sugar as sweeteners, but even those I use rarely), milk (I still eat cheese and a few other dairy products, but just sparingly. I use almond milk to replace regular milk), soy, most corn products, and any other overly processed foods. I try to limit my grain intake of the grains I do eat (brown rice, oats, quinoa, buckwheat, etc), and eat a lot of meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. I’ve been at it for an entire year now, and it is amazing how much better I feel and how much the health issues I had have really minimized (read more about the issues I had in my last years New Year post). I have also lost about twenty pounds over the last year. I’m really passionate now about eating intentionally for your health and would highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you have health issues! I found that once I rid my house of the foods I shouldn’t be eating and ate healthy for a few weeks, I stopped craving foods I shouldn’t eat and it became easy to stay on track. Now, I don’t even really have to think about it, eating healthy is definitely a habit for me, rather than a challenge.

-I graduated from Tulane with a BA in both English and Studio Art! I also had my work in my first art exhibition, my BA show at Tulane! Both of these were huge events for 2013, and I’m so happy/relieved to have them in the past. College was a really stressful time in my life and I couldn’t be happier to have those days over with. I’ve so been enjoying the less-stressful lifestyle of being out of college.

-We made major debt pay-off progress! We started the Dave Ramsey debt snowball plan at the beginning of the year and our goal for the end of 2013 was to have Drew’s car and credit card debt paid off. We paid his credit card debt off last spring, and even with some set backs (like $4,000 worth of dental work for Drew) and me not working for most of the year, as of this month (January 2014) we will have the car paid off! I can’t wait to write that one last check! I’m really happy with our progress so far and I’m excited to step it up and get cracking on those student loans in 2014!

-I started working! In September of 2013, I started my first out-of-college job, as the Web & Publications/Communications Coordinator for a local church. I really love what I do (mostly graphic design, but other web/media work as well) and I couldn’t ask for better people to work with. God really blessed me with this opportunity and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to make money in a truly enjoyable and rewarding job.

-Drew also switched jobs, somewhat. Drew is still doing pretty much the same thing he has always been doing (being an IT Director in charter schools), but while he used to work in a contracted company for the schools, now he works directly for one of the schools he has always worked in. This brings along several benefit perks and means he isn’t stretched quite as thin between schools as he once was. He is still, of course, working for our business, P.S. Designs, as well.

2014 (goals)

-Better Life Balance. When I was in school, classes took up my days and homework/studying/paper-writing/novel-reading took up my nights. Now that I’m working, work takes up a good part of my day, but there is still time left in the evenings that I never had before that I can now use to focus on things I really want to do. Reading, blogging, craft projects, cooking, decorating/home projects, painting, etc! I want to try my best to make the best use of that time I have and enjoy it while I can. Learn what I have time for and what I don’t, what is a good use of the time I have and what isn’t. I want to try to keep a good balance between work and activities I enjoy, so I don’t get burnt out of my job as easily as I did with school. I also want to continue to make time to cook healthy meals, time to exercise, time for church/bible study, etc. I want to continue to be healthy in a well-rounded way.

-Expand Learning & Education in Different Ways. Now that I’m out of school, that doesn’t mean that my learning process stops. I want to continue to learn all of my life, and now is the perfect time to really focus on doing that in different ways. Reading more, maybe joining a book club, continuing to paint and build my body of work, learning even more about the design software I use every day, getting better at using my Wacom tablet, taking a calligraphy class, etc.

-Incorporating Exercise into the Everyday. Just developing a better exercise routine in general, whether that means more stretching/floor exercises in the mornings before work, attending more Pilates classes, going on more walks/runs in the neighborhood, playing Frisbee/tennis at the park, just making exercise a more natural part of my life.

-Focus on Our Marriage. We do already, but I really want us to take the time to really enjoy this time in our lives. We will only get so much time together just the two of us before we decide to start a family, so I really want us to cherish these moments as a couple before we expand our crew and the chaos grows!

-Gluten-free Baking. Now that I’ve really gotten good at eating only the foods I really should, I would like to expand my cooking repertoire of what I can do with those ingredients. Trying different recipes, different GF flours, experimenting with gluten-free bread and doughnut making, healthy snacks, etc. I would also like to educate myself better on different foods and their nutritional contents. I would also like to get better at buying/eating organic.

-Debt Pay-Off. Drew had to take out quite a bit of money in student loans to get through college. Our goal for 2014 is to completely pay off the loans in Drew’s name and begin to pay on the ones in Drew’s parents name. I have confidence that it is going to be a good year for our debt snowball plan!

-Consistent Branding and New Opportunities. Last but not least, I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve for 2014. A few things I’m interested in trying out, creatively expanding into. I don’t want to give all the details away now, but you’ll see. Part of that includes creating a more consistent brand for myself as an artist/designer across all areas and media (my blog, art portfolio, social media, etc.). I’m excited for the opportunities this year has in store and where those creative opportunities could lead!

What are you looking forward to in 2014?

P.S. It is a bit of a tradition to share my old year recap and new year goals on here. See here for 2013, here for 2012, and here and here for 2011.

Before we head into a brand new year tomorrow, I wanted to wrap up 2013 with a few scenes from Christmas:

I’m really glad I got to be home to spend time with family and friends–cooking, eating, shopping, visiting, laughing, playing games, opening gifts, and surprising my dad with a retirement party–even if it was just a few short days and although I was sick in bed with a cough/cold/stomach bug the majority of the trip.

Now I’m back in New Orleans wishing those Christmas days could have been longer.

Hope you all had a lovely and merry Christmas! Now for a Happy New Year as well!

P.S. The abstract paintings pictured above are ones I painted for several of the ladies in my life. They are abstract color portraits, each painted with colors I associate with the person the painting was made for. All are painted on stretched, patterned fabric. They are part of a new series that I’m working on. More about that later. 🙂

During the past school year, my time was pretty much 100% devoted to schoolwork. I literally came home every day from school to simply sit on my couch and read books or write papers for school. If I wasn’t doing that, then I was in the painting studio trying to finish paintings for my art exhibition. It was tiring and exhausting. My house was constantly a mess, I rarely had time to cook dinner anymore, I didn’t do my hair or wear make-up to school a single day the entire year. It was definitely a year with a lack of any sort of “me” time. I think life should have a healthier balance than that. I didn’t have a choice however, so over the past year, whenever Drew and his friends would go play Frisbee at the park or I saw others making time for movies and other fun events, I would jot down in a notebook things that I wanted to make a priority in my life once my college years were behind me, when I had a “real life.”

Thank goodness that day has come. I’m a listy person and I loved the challenge of my 20 before 20 list I did a couple years ago, so I thought it would be fun to do something similar again. This list however is much more general and doesn’t have any particular end date the things have to be accomplished by. It is a list of self improvement, things I want to make a bigger priority in life, things I want to do for “me” time, things that need to get done around the house, things I haven’t had time to do in the last year, etc. Let’s get started, shall we? Introducing the now-that-I-have-a-real-life list:

real life list header

Listed in no particular order:

1. Try to read at least one book a month (of MY choosing!)

2. Make time to actually read the magazines I subscribe to.

3. Make time for more DIY/home projects. (fabric roman shades for the kitchen, refinish Drew’s dresser, paint/stain Drew’s desk, makeover our coffee table, makeover white cabinet in foyer, style office built-ins, hang art in the rest of the hallway, etc.)

4. Re-arrange and organize my home office/studio. (Set up a spot for painting, work on storage solutions, fabric storage, etc.)

5. Make a list of goals for what I want to accomplish next in life. (Keep the school momentum going!)

6. Plan a vacation that doesn’t fall on a typical school break.

7. Make an entryway area in our foyer. (mirror on wall, bench seat, baskets for shoes, coat hooks, etc.)

8. Update resume, figure out how to write a cover letter, start looking for jobs. (already started!)

9. Research potential grad school programs?

10. Spend time reading through the cookbooks I have and try more recipes outside my typical taste.

11. Have a picnic in the park, play frisbee, relax.

12. Develop a better exercise routine in addition to my Pilates classes. Take a yoga class, evening bike rides, morning jogs, more time at the gym.

13. Garden!

14. Journal/write/blog more. (Poetry image notebook)

15. Visit more flea markets and estate sales! Can’t beat great vintage finds!

16. Plan weekend trips to explore Louisiana and the surrounding areas. (Monroe, Shreveport, etc.)

17. Plan a trip to Texas! (Other than a layover on a flight to Cali, I’ve never been to Texas and it is super close to Louisiana!)

18. Work on keeping our marriage healthy. (more date nights, time for each other away from the computer!, etc.)

19. Frame and hang more of my own artwork.

20. Add more interest and pattern to our bedroom decor. (It is still a little “blah” right now! Bring in some pattern/color/texture! Hang art, find nightstands, get new lamps.)

21. Make nightly Bible studies more in depth and find a home church in New Orleans.

22. Sign Drew and I up for a ceramics workshop class!

23. Work with gazelle-like intensity on our budget/debt pay off! (Dave Ramsey plan)

24. Learn Adobe Illustrator to the max! (I know how to do a lot in it, but I’m mostly self-taught and there is much more I want to know how to do!)

25. Start on surface pattern design self-education! (Illustrator, Start sketching patterns, finding inspiration, designing repeatable patterns, coming up with color schemes, working with my Wacom tablet, etc.)

26. Make a quilt!

27. Plan a trip back to Europe (hopefully sometime in the next few years). I want to visit Kristine in Denmark and Jacky in Germany/Switzerland, would also love to go to Italy, Greece, Ireland/Scotland (where my Wallace ancestors came from forever ago), and a million other places. Drew wants to check out the craft beer selections in Belgium.

28.  Spend more time watercolor painting, series of sketches, finished works, etc. (It was my first love!)

29. Redesign Icing on the Cake blog (already started on this too!)

30. Work on putting together P.S. Designs Portfolio (graphic design, logo/branding work, print products)

31. Take classes in calligraphy and letterpress.

32. Open an Etsy shop?

33. Get better at gluten-free baking.

34. Design stationary for myself.

35. Continue to paint, exploring more fabric paintings.

36. Watch Downton Abbey. (and other shows I haven’t had time for in the last few years!)

37. Read my Papaw’s book. (I’ve read most of the stories in it, and went around with him reading them at book signings when the book first came out, but I’ve never taken the time to sit down and read it cover to cover, plus its been a while since it was published, so I should read them all again anyway!)

38. Next 5 years– hopefully buy and start remodeling a house!

I’m sure these will continually be updated and added to, but it is a start for now!
