I haven’t blogged here in several weeks, even though I’ve had posts written and ready to publish. I guess sometimes blogging gets emotionally hard–hard to open yourself up and put yourself out there where anyone in the world can read about it.

With it being graduation season, I’ve been constantly reminded that it has been an entire year since I graduated from Tulane. If you’ve been reading this blog for some time, you’ll remember that my college days weren’t the most fun. College was an extremely stressful and hectic time in my life. The stress of classes, studying late into the night, not getting enough sleep, worrying about if I’d make the grades to keep my scholarship, worry about making sure I was choosing the right major, taking the right classes, and starting out onto the right career path, combined with the stress of being far away from family, missing out on family events, feeling not settled in a new place, and all the other stresses that go along with that. Drew and I also started a business and got married while in college–both great things, but also ones that can add additional pressure to an already stressful life. Mostly though, college was a sucky time for me because I had a lot of health issues. Extremely low energy, headaches, acne, minor weight gain, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (AKA: being sick every time I would ever eat anything!), and a slew of other random symptoms. After finally seeing the doctor several times and also a nutritionist, I found out I had both hypothyroidism and gluten-intolerance. Being able to make adjustments to my life based on those findings helped out tremendously, but it was still a great relief to finally graduate and be done with school.

Now that I’ve been out of school for an entire year, I have to say that being out of school is amazing. This last year has been a really tough year in many ways–the loss of my grandpa, excessive family drama, hurtful relationships, but it has also been pretty incredible too. The slightly-depressed-college-me has made many strides towards a happier self this past year. Working in a great environment with amazing people, furthering my art career, working on home and crafting projects that I didn’t have time for while in school, just being able to come home from work and make dinner then sit and read or crochet or paint or DO ANYTHING BUT HOMEWORK is so completely amazing.

A month or so ago, Drew and I grabbed our camera and tripod and drove a few streets over to take a few photos of ourselves. Why? You might ask, as some of our friends did when we said we had been taking pictures. My reply: I want to remember us at this moment in our lives.

Us with our cheesy, laughing, goofing-around grins and awkward bear hugs. Us on State Street, the street I drive down every day to get to work and back. Us in this beautiful city that we’ve fallen in love with. Us at this awesome time in our lives when we are fresh out of college, working hard together to figure out our finances and pay off Drew’s student debt to live financially free. Us working on DIY decorating projects in our apartment together, figuring out our married lives and enjoying this time of being young newlyweds (Are we still newlyweds? It’s been almost two years!). Working, painting, cooking, creating. Living healthy and gluten-free. Excited about dreams for the future– buying a house and having babies, but being completely content in this moment.

Even the smaller things that make up this photo– my favorite turquoise quatrefoil necklace (a gift from Drew), my favorite leather boots (a Christmas gift from my Dad), the subtle black and white pattern of my shirt, the jewel tones I’m wearing, my favorite jeans and gold watch (I wear so often I have a tan line around it), and my hair in its completely natural state. Mr. Beard and Button-ups over there wearing his “tassel-y shoes” and the watch I got him for Christmas. Those things all make up our style right now too. (Although I can’t believe how hot it has gotten over the last month since we took this picture, it is definitely way too hot for leather boots right now!)

I feel like this photo perfectly captures a little glimpse into this time of our lives. And I want to cherish and remember it.

happy-2014

Are you excited for the New Year? I’m always incredibly excited to start a brand new year. I’m a pretty self-reflective person all year, but there is just something special about starting over in the new year with goals and plans and dreams of what lies ahead.

I’m particularly excited about this year because it will be my first full year out of school. I’m pretty excited about all the new possibilities in life now that school doesn’t take up the majority of my days.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you might recall last year’s New Year post. I didn’t set a lot of goals for 2013, but the ones I set were pretty big ones. 2012 was a big year for us, considering we got married, Drew graduated, advances in work and our business happened, but it was a hectic year in school for me filled with some health issues and the start of some financial issues. Our goals for 2013 were for me to graduate from college, find a job, drastically change our health and diet (I went gluten-free and cut out a good deal of other not-good-for-me-stuff) and to drastically start on changes in our financial life by embarking on Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. I’m happy to say that in 2013, we did a really good job at sticking to our goals and changing those things.

2013 (recap)

-Big Health Changes. I went gluten-free, and once I did, I found that gluten (or at least wheat in particular), had been the cause of a lot of digestive problems for me. Once I cut it out of my diet, I immediately noticed that I was no longer having major digestive issues and I’ve noticed a huge change in my energy levels. I feel like I have much more energy and I feel less sluggish. In addition to wheat, I cut out white sugar (I try to only use honey, pure maple syrup, coconut sugar, or raw sugar as sweeteners, but even those I use rarely), milk (I still eat cheese and a few other dairy products, but just sparingly. I use almond milk to replace regular milk), soy, most corn products, and any other overly processed foods. I try to limit my grain intake of the grains I do eat (brown rice, oats, quinoa, buckwheat, etc), and eat a lot of meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. I’ve been at it for an entire year now, and it is amazing how much better I feel and how much the health issues I had have really minimized (read more about the issues I had in my last years New Year post). I have also lost about twenty pounds over the last year. I’m really passionate now about eating intentionally for your health and would highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you have health issues! I found that once I rid my house of the foods I shouldn’t be eating and ate healthy for a few weeks, I stopped craving foods I shouldn’t eat and it became easy to stay on track. Now, I don’t even really have to think about it, eating healthy is definitely a habit for me, rather than a challenge.

-I graduated from Tulane with a BA in both English and Studio Art! I also had my work in my first art exhibition, my BA show at Tulane! Both of these were huge events for 2013, and I’m so happy/relieved to have them in the past. College was a really stressful time in my life and I couldn’t be happier to have those days over with. I’ve so been enjoying the less-stressful lifestyle of being out of college.

-We made major debt pay-off progress! We started the Dave Ramsey debt snowball plan at the beginning of the year and our goal for the end of 2013 was to have Drew’s car and credit card debt paid off. We paid his credit card debt off last spring, and even with some set backs (like $4,000 worth of dental work for Drew) and me not working for most of the year, as of this month (January 2014) we will have the car paid off! I can’t wait to write that one last check! I’m really happy with our progress so far and I’m excited to step it up and get cracking on those student loans in 2014!

-I started working! In September of 2013, I started my first out-of-college job, as the Web & Publications/Communications Coordinator for a local church. I really love what I do (mostly graphic design, but other web/media work as well) and I couldn’t ask for better people to work with. God really blessed me with this opportunity and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to make money in a truly enjoyable and rewarding job.

-Drew also switched jobs, somewhat. Drew is still doing pretty much the same thing he has always been doing (being an IT Director in charter schools), but while he used to work in a contracted company for the schools, now he works directly for one of the schools he has always worked in. This brings along several benefit perks and means he isn’t stretched quite as thin between schools as he once was. He is still, of course, working for our business, P.S. Designs, as well.

2014 (goals)

-Better Life Balance. When I was in school, classes took up my days and homework/studying/paper-writing/novel-reading took up my nights. Now that I’m working, work takes up a good part of my day, but there is still time left in the evenings that I never had before that I can now use to focus on things I really want to do. Reading, blogging, craft projects, cooking, decorating/home projects, painting, etc! I want to try my best to make the best use of that time I have and enjoy it while I can. Learn what I have time for and what I don’t, what is a good use of the time I have and what isn’t. I want to try to keep a good balance between work and activities I enjoy, so I don’t get burnt out of my job as easily as I did with school. I also want to continue to make time to cook healthy meals, time to exercise, time for church/bible study, etc. I want to continue to be healthy in a well-rounded way.

-Expand Learning & Education in Different Ways. Now that I’m out of school, that doesn’t mean that my learning process stops. I want to continue to learn all of my life, and now is the perfect time to really focus on doing that in different ways. Reading more, maybe joining a book club, continuing to paint and build my body of work, learning even more about the design software I use every day, getting better at using my Wacom tablet, taking a calligraphy class, etc.

-Incorporating Exercise into the Everyday. Just developing a better exercise routine in general, whether that means more stretching/floor exercises in the mornings before work, attending more Pilates classes, going on more walks/runs in the neighborhood, playing Frisbee/tennis at the park, just making exercise a more natural part of my life.

-Focus on Our Marriage. We do already, but I really want us to take the time to really enjoy this time in our lives. We will only get so much time together just the two of us before we decide to start a family, so I really want us to cherish these moments as a couple before we expand our crew and the chaos grows!

-Gluten-free Baking. Now that I’ve really gotten good at eating only the foods I really should, I would like to expand my cooking repertoire of what I can do with those ingredients. Trying different recipes, different GF flours, experimenting with gluten-free bread and doughnut making, healthy snacks, etc. I would also like to educate myself better on different foods and their nutritional contents. I would also like to get better at buying/eating organic.

-Debt Pay-Off. Drew had to take out quite a bit of money in student loans to get through college. Our goal for 2014 is to completely pay off the loans in Drew’s name and begin to pay on the ones in Drew’s parents name. I have confidence that it is going to be a good year for our debt snowball plan!

-Consistent Branding and New Opportunities. Last but not least, I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve for 2014. A few things I’m interested in trying out, creatively expanding into. I don’t want to give all the details away now, but you’ll see. Part of that includes creating a more consistent brand for myself as an artist/designer across all areas and media (my blog, art portfolio, social media, etc.). I’m excited for the opportunities this year has in store and where those creative opportunities could lead!

What are you looking forward to in 2014?

P.S. It is a bit of a tradition to share my old year recap and new year goals on here. See here for 2013, here for 2012, and here and here for 2011.

Before we head into a brand new year tomorrow, I wanted to wrap up 2013 with a few scenes from Christmas:

pic collage3

I’m really glad I got to be home to spend time with family and friends–cooking, eating, shopping, visiting, laughing, playing games, opening gifts, and surprising my dad with a retirement party–even if it was just a few short days and although I was sick in bed with a cough/cold/stomach bug the majority of the trip.

Now I’m back in New Orleans wishing those Christmas days could have been longer.

Hope you all had a lovely and merry Christmas! Now for a Happy New Year as well!

P.S. The abstract paintings pictured above are ones I painted for several of the ladies in my life. They are abstract color portraits, each painted with colors I associate with the person the painting was made for. All are painted on stretched, patterned fabric. They are part of a new series that I’m working on. More about that later. 🙂

Merry Christmas from the Rowland’s! May your days be Merry & Bright!

Our Christmas Card, this year and last. I just love Christmas Cards. A great way to send a cheery message to family and friends during the holiday season.

2012 and 2013 edit1

We’ve got a nice little collection so far:

cards on door edit1

Do you send out Christmas cards every year?  It is one of my favorite Christmas traditions. I especially love the photo ones. So nice to see how everyone changes from year to year (as if we don’t all keep up on Facebook anyway!).

Merry Christmas! Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season!

P.S. The cursive font on our cards this year is actually my handwriting! I’m enjoying doing more things with my Wacom tablet!

I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving! I really love Thanksgiving and think it is such a needed holiday. Everyone needs to be reminded of all they have to be thankful for and I’m happy that Thanksgiving gives us a chance to focus on our blessings from God.

Isn’t that table gorgeous? I love it! My dad just put it into the kitchen of my childhood home and it is over 100 years old! It is the old meeting table of our local Moose lodge that my great-grandpa Wallace was a part of. I love the imperfection and character of it.

As I get older, it seems our Thanksgiving traditions seem to flux and change with different family needs. I really love tradition though, so I’m happy that it seems I’m still able to cherish traditions while also making way for new ones as well.

My younger sisters, my husband and I made Thanksgiving for our family. I love cooking and we had a great time getting everything together. We made most of the traditional Thanksgiving foods, but the majority of everything we made was gluten-free. Mashed potatoes, homemade turkey gravy, baked sweet potatoes, roasted asparagus with Parmesan cheese, caramelized broccoli with garlic, GF cornbread, baked ham, deep fried turkey, sweet tea, and my Mamaw’s apple salad. Kelsey and Jill also made crescent rolls, apple dumplings, and pies that weren’t gluten-free. I was traveling there the day before or else I would have made GF pies (I just didn’t eat any, I ate apple salad for dessert instead).

I also made a leftover turkey pot-pie complete with a homemade GF pie crust, rolled out with a can of tomatoes. I also got to visit Fergus, my little sister, Jill’s, goat, who has packed on a little winter weight since I saw him this summer.

Since we live in New Orleans, ten hours away from the rest of our families, it is always such cherished time when we are back in our familiar hometown, back in the country where you can see all the stars at night. I’m so thankful for my family and I’m so happy I got to spend much-needed time with them. I only wish it was longer! Christmas will be here soon though!

How was your Thanksgiving?

I’m back with another outfit post. Time for “What I Wore Wednesday:”

Nov 4 - Nov 26 with watermark

I feel like my outfits this month better describe my personality (simple, lots of jewel tones, neutrals and patterns) than the ones in the last outfit post I did. I also have been embracing the whole “natural wavy/curly” hair look more and only curled my hair once this month. I’m starting to like it better natural. I feel like it feels more “real” or something. Not that I seem fake when I curl my hair, but I like the low-maintenance but still pretty sort-of thing (plus I haven’t felt like waking up earlier to curl my hair!).

In general, I’m pretty boring when it comes to my hair. It is either down or in a ponytail. Any hair suggestions for naturally wavy/curly hair that has a lot of volume?

See past outfit posts here and here.

P.S. Most of my outfits are put together with pieces I’ve had in my closet for years, so I’m not including sources for that reason (most wouldn’t be available anymore), but feel free to ask me in the comments if you have any questions about where I got something, I’d be happy to answer!

I got such positive feedback on my first outfit/fashion post, here, that I thought I would share more outfit posts on here occasionally. So behold, what I wore the last two weeks:

Oct 20-Nov 2

Unlike my first post, which were all work outfits, this post includes some outfits I wore on the weekends as well. Although I would hardly consider myself a fashion anything, I do like these posts because photographing them (and sharing them with the world) makes me consider my outfits a little deeper and encourages me think outside the box, to try to not wear the same exact thing everyday. For instance, that pencil skirt–I’ve had it for several years and never worn it. And that raspberry striped button up that I’m wearing under the polka pot sweater–it was one of my speech suit shirts from high school that I haven’t worn a single time in the last five years. It is seriously making me reconsider my closet, y’all.

How much thought do you put into putting outfits together? Where do you find fashion inspiration?

I really can’t believe I actually look forward to getting ready for work in the mornings. I never thought I’d say that!

P.S. Most of my outfits are put together with pieces I’ve had in my closet for years, so I’m not including sources for that reason (most wouldn’t be available anymore), but feel free to ask me in the comments if you have any questions about where I got something, I’d be happy to answer!

Alternate title: “Most Pictures of Myself in a Blog Post Ever”

Just about a month ago (on the 23rd of September, to be exact), I started a new job. An amazing opportunity that God truly opened up for me. I’m now the Web & Publications/Communications Coordinator for a local church. I do mostly graphic design work–designing/formatting/printing the Sunday bulletins, the quarterly magazine the church does, various invitations for different church programs and events, brochures, flyers, directories, reports, devotional booklets, etc. I also manage the website, (currently also working on a website re-design), create and send out weekly e-newsletters, create digital display ads, do some copy writing/editing, and manage social media/marketing, amongst other things. I really, really am enjoying the work I do and the people I work with are great. It is definitely a position in which I get to use my artistic/creative side, my English/copy editing side, and my graphic/web design skills. It is the perfect place for me right now.

One big change about leaving the house to work (all summer I worked from home for our business), is not only getting to talk to real people during the day (YAY for social interaction!), but actually having to get dressed up for work. The part of a daily routine where I wear put-together outfits, do my hair and actually apply make-up, is one that had taken a backseat for the last four years. College was just such a busy/stressful time for me, full of several health issues, sleep deprivation, and a lot of worrying about things more important than my daily appearance. I’m a pretty simple, low-maintenance girl when it comes to that type of thing (If I’m not going to work, some sort of event where I need to look presentable, or getting my picture taken, this girl has naturally wavy hair and no make-up on whatsoever). I’m totally not one of those people who are too afraid to leave the house or go to the grocery store without being dressed-up.

So anyway, when my first day of work rolled around, I got out my camera and tripod and set it up so that I could take a picture (to document the fact that I curled by hair and put make-up on for the first time in months) and that sort-of turned in to a month-long photo project documenting my business casual attire.

Behold, the most amount of selfies you’ve ever seen of me:

business casual outfits with watermark

Photographing my outfits every day made me start to push them a little outside my normal boundaries as well. I’m totally a “recipe” dresser by nature. My normal daily outfit (during school or before I was working) went something like this: favorite pair of jeans, favorite pair of flats, gold watch, simple gold necklace, plain tank top, fitted top, coordinating cardigan. Other than switching it up in the winter with scarves and the summer with sandals, my daily clothes-wearing didn’t ever differ much. Now that I’m in a more professional setting where blue jeans and flip-flops are a no-go, and since I was taking pictures everyday (and didn’t want every picture to look the same by wearing practically the same thing), I’ve really gotten back into thinking more about putting together outfits that look nice, while still being cute and comfortable.

Another added benefit–getting a lot more use out of some pieces in my closet that I haven’t worn much! I did still keep several aspects of my typical outfit recipe: wearing mostly flats, plain tank tops, gold watch, fitted tops, cardigans, but I’ve switched up the pants I wear quite a bit (instead of pulling out my favorite pair everyday–although I did wear my fav tan corduroys more than the others), I’ve varied what shoes I’m wearing more often (even wearing some short wedge heels sometimes), I’ve been more thoughtful about wearing different necklaces/jewelry (although I’m still a pretty keep-it-simple jewelry wearer, I like gold and pearls!), and given more thought to other accessories like belts. I even wore a dress or two!

I’m actually quite enjoying (and dare I say, looking forward to) getting dressed up and ready for work!

P.S. I’m not including outfit sources on here, since a lot of my clothes aren’t new and still in stores. I usually shop at Dillard’s, Macy’s, Target, Gap, Old Navy, & Banana Republic though. If you have questions about a specific item, feel free to ask me in the comments!

P.P.S. I’ve been blogging for over three years (September 4th was my 3 year blogging anniversary) and this is my first fashion post. (That might tell you a little about how high of a priority it was in my life!)

This past weekend, I helped my little sister, Kelsey, move into her freshman dorm room. She is studying Fashion Design & Merchandising and I think you can tell by her room! It is very pretty and glamorous! I love the black, white and gold with small touches of pinks and mint. So pretty!

I can’t take much credit for the room, I only helped with some ideas/suggestions for things and I helped unpack and style everything. Kelsey has a great eye for interior design as well.

I love that she stacked these fashion books up and then put the lamp on top of them. It’s a great way to raise the lamp a little higher and have books within reach to read in bed, but still leaves room on the rest of the nightstand for other things. The books give a visual break between the black table and black lamp, plus they add the perfect amount of color and look so pretty! (I love decorating with books! No room is complete without them!)

art and plant brighter1

The two prints above (from here and here), the painting (by me), the frame & photo (on the nightstand) and the plant (plant and pot from Lowe’s) were Kelsey’s high school graduation/moving into college gift from me. “Pretty is as Pretty does” is a saying our grandmother used to tell me when I was little. It’s hard to tell in the photos, but the edges of the canvas are painted gold and the words are painted in mint and gold. Instead of using regular canvas, I stretched black and white hounds-tooth canvas fabric over stretcher bars to give the background more interest/pattern. I love the way this little area all looks together.

I don’t know the sources for everything, but I know that the lamp and nightstand are from HomeGoods/TJ Maxx (she added the crystal/glass knob from Hobby Lobby), the wire basket was a clearance find from HomeGoods as well (I talked her into getting it!) that she spray painted gold (was originally magenta), the black/white comforter is from TJ Maxx, the sheets are from the Martha Stewart collection at Macy’s, the pillows are a collection from different stores (the gold bolster pillow is vintage, my mom has had it forever), the fur throw is from TJ Maxx, the fur rugs are from Target, the hat boxes are from Hobby Lobby (she spray painted the middle one gold), the gold mirror is vintage (we’ve had it at my parent’s house forever), the letter box on the desk is from HomeGoods (she spray painted it mint), the pencil cup is from Target, the black/white leaning jewelry rack she made (cut your wood to size, staple fabric around and screw in hooks), the gold metal jewelry stand is from Hobby Lobby (spray painted gold), and the smaller black jewelry box and mirrored/crystal perfume tray are from Hobby Lobby.

Kelsey has a ton of clothes, shoes, and jewelry (she is in the Fashion program and all), but I think she did a great job with making these pieces work double duty and function as decor as well. A lot of her jewelry is out on display, which makes it much easier to find when putting together outfits, but also adds pretty pops of color and works like an art piece in the room. She also added simple white shoe shelving under the bed to give extra storage for footwear. (Seen in photos above)

Her school colors are maroon and white, so the maroon curtains on the windows (and on the closets at the end of her desk area, not pictured) were already there, but I think they work really well with the rest of her decor. The colored floral pillow is from Target and the ottoman is from HomeGoods, recovered by my mom in matching fabric (originally a curtain, also from Target).

I’m so excited about how her room turned out and I’m so happy that I was able to be there to help her move in! Best wishes to her as she starts this new chapter in her life! I can’t believe how fast the last four years flew by, it seems like not that long ago that I was moving into my freshman dorm! (see pictures of that, here).

Its getting close to back-to-school time and it seems so crazy that this will be the first fall that I’m not headed back to school!  Anyway, my little sister, Kelsey, is going to be a freshman in college this year and I’ve been having fun the last few weeks helping her with ideas for decorating her dorm room. It’s been making me reminisce back to my dorm room days. So I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane and give some decorating advice from me and my freshman roommate (and super awesomely talented decorator friend), Sarah! Follow her on Pinterest and check out her great ideas for home, dorm, and apartment spaces.

freshman dorm birthday1 words

Sarah and I were roommates our freshman year and then had single rooms right next to each other our sophomore year. We really lucked out both years in that we stayed in older dorms that had slightly larger rooms with taller ceilings and pretty wooden shaker style furniture and pretty windows.

Here is a tour of our Freshman dorm:

My side was the cream/pink/green/blue side with the large flower paintings and Sarah’s was the colorful one with the four art panels and clothesline of pictures. Looking back on this dorm room there are definitely things that I would change about my decorating. My taste/style/skills have definitely changed over the past four years. I still look back on this little room with fond memories though and it was really the first place of my own I really got to decorate.

One thing about shared rooms, if you are going to have a roommate, it wouldn’t hurt to contact them before move-in day (if possible) to coordinate your plans, color schemes, etc with them. Not that both sides of the room have to completely match or anything, but it might be nice to at least know what they have planned and coordinate somewhat, since things like curtains and rugs might be something that overlap both sides of the room, and if there is only one window, obviously only one of you can hang curtains on it. (and so only one of you brings a television or a refrigerator–space is limited!) It is also a good way to break the ice and get to know your roommate a little bit better before moving in together and it helps to feel like you already have a friend before you get to school. (especially if you are moving far from home for college)

Now onto our sophomore dorm rooms!

I just love Sarah’s style and the way she mixes colors and patterns so effortlessly. I asked her if she had any advice on dorm decorating and this is what she had to say:

As far as color schemes go for dorms, I’m more of a fan of busy because the rooms are usually so bland, like really neutral, industrial, and cold. I used to think of my bed as like a scrapbook or an outfit, like how could I combine really fun colors and patterns to make it the focus of the room. I think as long as you pick one pattern, like a quilt, that is dominant, maybe a crazy, large floral print, you are kind of free to mix whatever other prints with it as long as it is a smaller print, like a stripe, check, polka dot, or even something more geometrical like damask. Freshman/Sophomore year, my quilt (wild floral print, pictured above) was from Anthropologie. Junior and Senior year I did a floral duvet from Urban Outfitters. Then I mixed fun vine sheets in a turquoise color from PBteen and a green and white damask quilt. Even though it was very busy, it livened up the boring room a lot! Pillows are also essential.  I liked a lot of them and all different sizes to make the bed more of a focal point…plus it kind of doubles as your bed and a couch.

I think rugs are a must! The floors are so gross in dorms. My Junior/Senior year they were laminate and almost identical to the floors in my 2nd grade classroom. Rugs make it so homey. Urban Outfitters has fun ones that are usually pretty big for not a whole lot of money. I’ve also found some at Target and World Market, and even the sale pile at Pottery Barn.

I’m also a huge fan of lamps. I found a lot of mine at dollar stores and just spray painted them a fun color or texture and bought nicer shades at Target or Pottery Barn.

Storage was big for me too. I bought tons of baskets and bins in all different sizes. Most of mine came from World Market and Target. I probably spent more on these, but I still use them! I also bought old suitcases at antique stores to double as storage and even tables. I stored school supplies and extra electrical cords and junk like that in them, and then stacked them up to use as a table. I also still use these all the time too.

I think you can find great stuff at antique stores, thrift shops, and flea markets for dorms. I usually went there looking for nightstands, big lamps, suitcases, chalkboards, picture frames, and trunks. Anything that can be used as storage or painted a fun color is a winner!

As far as art and other decor goes, I liked painting old frames fun colors and putting my favorite pictures in them. I liked to use my books as art too. They brought a lot of fun color to the room. I also liked to bring in plants in fun pots. Oh and curtains. Curtains are good way to bring in color, pattern, and texture. Plus you can jack up the tacky mini-blinds and just move your curtains back and forth to let in natural light. Pier 1 and World Market are both places that you can usually score good curtain finds.

My biggest tips for dorm decorating would be:
1. use color, the wilder the better (bedding, curtains)
2. get a rug and fun lamps
3. storage (all kinds of baskets and bins–can’t have too many)
4. art, pictures, books (reminds you of home and brings in more color)

Such great advice (and great resources!)

I totally agree with what Sarah said! A few other things I’ll add:

If you are afraid of going too bold with mixing too many colors and patterns in your decor and bedding, try adding in different textures instead. My mattelasse/coverlet was a neutral cream color, but it had an embroidered floral texture all over it. I also had neutral cream sheets, but they had shiny lace edging on the ends. Use a fur throw, or a cool textured throw pillow or two. Pillows are a great way to do this as you can easily use different fabrics that give different tones/textures, like satin, velvet, burlap, sequinned, etc.

Dorm rooms can get cold (or hot) and you might not have much control over the temperature, so it’s nice to be prepared with layers of blankets and pillows to snuggle up in. Think fluffy comforter, throw on the end of the bed, and nest of pillows. My biggest tip as far as bedding goes is to buy a full size quilt or comforter for your bed. Most people’s initial reaction for a twin size bed is to buy a twin size, but since dorm beds are usually built up really high to accommodate storage underneath, a full size hangs down lower and helps to hide all that junk under the bed. It also is more practical as it can be used longer in a future apartment with a larger bed instead of only for a twin. King size pillows are almost the exact width of a twin size bed so I loved using a king size pillow behind/along with my standard size pillows to give my pillows more variation in size and presence.

Most dorms come furnished with a bed, dresser, desk and chair. Most don’t include a nightstand or bedside table. This is the one real piece of furniture that you get to choose for the space, so make it fun. Choose something with extra storage like drawers or shelves for books or baskets. Any extra storage you can get out of a dorm room is essential. Maybe paint it a fun color or choose something with curvy lines if the rest of your dorm furniture is boring. (Look at thrift stores or check Craigslist for a piece you can refinish, ask your parents or grandparents if they have one they aren’t using anymore that you could paint, or look at HomeGoods or Target for newer options)

Make everything multi-functional. In a small space, all areas have to multi-task. Make your bed comfy and fill it with lots of pillows and a throw blanket so that it not only functions as a bed, but a lounging area in the daytime. (Head to a fabric store and pick out a few of your favorite coordinating fabrics to make fun colorful/patterned pillows from) Your desk not only has to function as a place to do schoolwork and study, but it also becomes a make-up and getting ready station. Choose storage that easily accommodates both. (The white beauty storage piece on my desk was from PB Teen) Find a cool way to display your jewelry so that not only is it easy to pick out when you are in a rush to get ready for class, but that it also looks pretty and functions like a colorful art display. (Urban Outfitters has a lot of cool jewelry storage options) If you have a small sink in your room, find a pretty soap bottle. Everything ends up being on display in a dorm room, so choose pretty options for otherwise boring things.

I feel like the absolute most important thing about a dorm room though, is making it feel like home. Curtains make an amazing difference in a space, as do rugs, photos, colorful books, art, pretty glass bottles, etc. Lamps are perhaps one of the most important, as you can’t do a lot else to control lighting in a space. Overhead florescent lighting in dorm rooms casts such a bright (and annoying) glow, so choose softer lighting via lamps. (I don’t think I once used the overhead lighting in the two years I lived on campus! I hate florescent lights!) Last, but not least, I think every room needs at least one (or more!) plants. They add life and color and filter the air (which is great for dorms where germs get spread easily!) Make sure you check the tags on any plants you buy to make sure that the amount/type of sunlight they need matches the amount of natural light your room has. Plant pots/containers are another great way to bring in color/texture/pattern into a space.
